The journey from a scientific breakthrough to a commercial product is notoriously difficult, but the TECH2X Research-to-Market Accelerator has successfully completed its first phase, demonstrating a robust model for deep tech venture building. By bridging the gap between scientific discovery and market viability, the program aimed to transform high-potential research into structured entrepreneurial initiatives.
A rigorous path to innovation
The 12-week program followed a high-intensity “Delivery Rhythm” based on weekly Lean Startup loops. Under the guidance of Almacube and Esade coaches, teams were pushed to move from a Proof-of-Value toward a validated business concept and a testable Minimum Viable Product (MVP).
The program’s impact in numbers:
- 4 Active Patents & Prototypes advanced through the program.
- 9 Researchers & 12 Master Students collaborated in multidisciplinary teams.
- +15 Coaching hours and +5 Mentorship hours dedicated to each team.
Meet the TECH2X pioneers
The first edition featured four standout projects, three from Italy and one from Spain, each addressing critical challenges in healthcare, infrastructure, HPC, and sports safety:
- DRIVE (patent developed in University of Bologna and Sant’Orsola / Coached by Almacube):
- The technology: A biomedical device designed to improve ovarian tissue reimplantation for patients undergoing oncological treatments.
- Next step after the TECH2X program: Seeking grants for clinical validation.
- Intellisense (patent developed in University of Bologna / Coached by Almacube):
- The technology: Edge-AI ultrasonic sensing for predictive diagnostics of industrial plants and infrastructure.
- Next step after the TECH2X program: Collaborating with the Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO) for patent licensing with interested companies found during the program.
- Sensing Piezoelectric (patent developed in University of Modena and Reggio Emilia / Coached by Almacube):
- The technology: Impact-monitoring sensors integrated into sports equipment to prevent concussions.
- Next step after the TECH2X program: Advancing Technical Readiness Level (TRL) through national/EU grants.
- OrionLinks (research developed in European XFEL / Coached by Esade):
- The technology: A decision-support tool for High-Performance Computing (HPC) operators to manage operational risks.
- Next step after the TECH2X program: Ready for venture creation.
Lessons learned & the road to phase 2
While the program achieved significant milestones, it also provided key insights for the future of deep tech incubation. The “Key Takeaways” emphasize the importance of Critical Researcher Engagement and the need for a “Spin-off First” strategy.
To build on this success, Phase 2 will introduce enhanced governance, including a “Decision Gate” to clarify the path between licensing and spin-off creation from day one. The goal remains clear: ensuring that Europe’s best research doesn’t stay in the lab but reaches the people and industries that need it most.
